Cycling around Lincoln and Lincolnshire

Is Lincolnshire really flat?

4th September 2016

Our Bed and Breakfast in Saxilby is just 5 metres above sea level and next to the Fossdyke Canal. The Canal runs from the River Trent in Torksey to the Brayford Pool in Lincoln. There are no locks between Torksey and Lincoln because it is all pretty much the same level. This makes it great for cycling and just 200 yards from Canal View B&B is a multi-user path (cycle path) which goes from Saxilby into Lincoln. A large part of this path runs along the bank of the Fossdyke Canal. Once you reach Lincoln you can visit the beautiful Cathedral and historic Castle which is up a very steep hill or you can go through the City and follow the Water Rail Way which follows the old Lincoln to Boston railway along the banks of Lincolnshire's River Witham. For the more adventurous Lincoln is also on the Dover to Shetland Islands route, this route is hilly in places!

Sometimes it is easier to leave your bike at home, in and around Lincoln there are many facilites where you can hire a bike. At Burton Waters, just 2-3 miles away, you can Park and hire a bike from between £2 and £5. If you prefer a better bike or want to explore off road then you can hire a high quality bike (from £30 per day) at the Giant Store at nearby Doddington Hall.
